Over the past few years, the skateboard culture in Ethiopia's capital has been on the rise, attracting a growing community of enthusiasts and carving out its own unique identity. Skateboarding started to gain traction in Addis Ababa around 2013 when a group of young Ethiopians formed a group ethiopia skate at the sarbet parking lot in addis ababa. this small g roup would later grow to amass more than a 160 members and also have members in other small towns outside the country and athleticism displayed in these videos, they decided to embark on their own skateboarding journey. However, the absence of skateparks and proper facilities posed a significant challenges at first for the community things later on stared to change like the construction of Addis Skatepark which is Ethiopia's first free of charge public concrete skatepark. It was constructed in April, 2016 in collaboration with Make Life Skate Life, a non-profit organization that creates free of charge, community-built concrete skateparks with skateboard communities around the world.the park was built with a team of over 60 voluteer skatepark builders and skaters from around the world and in november 2017 they built ethiopias seconnd free of charge community skatepark the hawassa skatepark.
The construction of the 600 square meter skate park in Addis has had a significant impact on the local culture, especially among the younger generation. Prior to the skate park's existence, many kids in Addis had never seen or been exposed to a skate park before. However, with the establishment of this skate park, a new environment was introduced to their lives.The skate park has become a source of inspiration for many children who are now growing up with this environment around them. They are exposed to the skateboarding culture, witnessing the skills and tricks performed by more experienced skaters. This exposure has sparked interest and passion for skateboarding among the youth in Addis.
As the skateboard scene grew, it became more than just a sport or hobby—it became a vehicle for empowerment and self-expression. Skateboarding provided an outlet for young people to channel their energy and creativity, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie. It offered an alternative to negative influences and provided an avenue for personal growth and development. Skateboarders learned valuable life skills such as perseverance, discipline, and teamwork, which transcended the boundaries of the skatepark and influenced other aspects of their lives.
While the skateboarding culture in Addis Ababa continues to grow, it faces several challenges. The lack of proper infrastructure, such as skateparks and well-maintained skate spots, remains a significant hurdle. Limited access to skateboarding equipment and financial constraints also pose obstacles for aspiring skateboarders. However, despite these challenges, the passion and determination of the skateboarding community remain unwavering. Looking ahead, the future of skateboarding in Addis Ababa is promising. Efforts are being made by local organizations and individuals to build skateparks, provide access to equipment, and promote the sport among young people.
